Iraqi police take firing positions as they drive to Baghdad after a joint US-Iraqi offensive on Latifiyah, a haven for Sunni Muslim insurgents. The towns of Latifiyah and Mahmudiya, 15 miles south of Baghdad, have long been under de facto control of the insurgents. Rebels have regularly assassinated police officers, raided stations and ambushed cars on the deadly stretch of road.
